Overview

The Algalita Experienceship is a virtual interactive course designed to give you an educational journey through the many facets of plastic pollution and its solution set, including global and local implications. Weekly online meetings will involve lectures, discussions, brainstorming, individual activities and guest speakers.

Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge, tools, and resources to have a deep understanding of
this critical environmental issue and challenge you to think critically about the solutions, taking
unintended consequences, social issues like equality and economic development into consideration.
We want you to be best positioned for applying your skill-set to creating a future where plastic pollution is unthinkable.

This program is designed for:
– College and university students interested in applying their studies and careers to addressing plastic
pollution. Students of all disciplines/majors are welcome. We need cross-discipline discussion to
effectively address this environmental issue at its core.

– High school students looking to further their knowledge about plastic pollution and solutions.- Young professionals invested in bringing the conversation about plastic pollution into their
communities and places of work.

Week 3: Tuesday June 9, 10-12 AM NZT – Identifying solutions

Homework: watch The Story of Plastic documentary and complete the associated worksheets

Week 4: Tuesday June 16, 10-12 AM NZT – Film analysis and discussion

Week 5: Tuesday June 23, 10-12 AM NZT – Digging in: Pre-consumer plastics supply chain

Week 6: Tuesday June 30, 10-12 AM NZT – Digging in: Post-consumer plastics supply chain

Week 7: Tuesday July 7, 10-12 AM NZT – Picking apart the crisis & summarizing the impact

Week 8: Tuesday July 14, 10-12 AM NZT – Diving into solutions: Circular economy, EPR, Zero-Waste,
Biomimicry, etc.

Week 9: Tuesday July 21, 10-12 AM NZT – Diving into solutions: Circular economy, EPR,
Zero-Waste, Biomimicry, etc. cont’d

Week 10: Tuesday July 28, 10-12 AM NZT – Presentations on chosen topic

Week 11: Tuesday August 4, 10-12 AM NZT – Presentations on chosen topic

We’ll work with you and your college or university to arrange for course credit or internship credit,
where possible. Please notify us at or before the first session if you would like to arrange this. We ask
